SCI/BOMB BLAST WISH LIST

Wish list for the Recreational and Occupational Therapy teams from the SCI / Poly-trauma / Nursing home areas at Haley VA

Wii Remotes and Games The Wii has been an amazing hit, especially with those who have more physical function. We have been able to use it during Recreation Therapy and Physical Therapy treatments to maximize function. Still, we’ve found the need to have more of the Wii remotes (usually about $40 each) so we can add more players at one time. We’ve also found that the Wii Playground game would be an excellent option for our Spinal Cord Injured vets and service members who have less function, as many of the games on it do not require the 2-button coordination like some other games do.

Xbox, Play Station and PC games We have a video game consoles as well as PCs here that the patients are able to use during Recreation Therapy. Used video games and systems are always welcome.

Electric Shavers Many of our people are coming back with missing fingers. Electric shavers make shaving much safer for them then using the regular safety razors to shave.

Headphones (again for bedside use, primarily in 4-bed rooms--- but the cheap kind because we cannot share them among patients, hygiene, so they must be “disposable”) Also for bedside use, cheap headphones help to “keep the peace” when the bedside TV sets are played too loud for the roommates.

Puzzle Books (word searches, crosswords, Sudoku, misc.) Puzzle books like word searches, crosswords, sudoku, etc. are always used by our patients, especially those that are stuck in bed long term.

Laptop Stands (www.easychairworkstation.com ) Our laptop stands have been amazing, particularly for the long term bedside patients. It allows them to go on-line for anything they need, accommodate nearly all laptop sizes, and gives them the freedom to manage their bills, e-mail and other personal affairs while they are here for long term healing/rehab. We have found them at www.easychairworkstation.com , and these have been the best ones to use with the height of power wheelchairs and hospital beds.

*** Ethernet cables for bedside connection (patients bring their own laptops but not the cables, so we ned some to loan out) I think we are in good shape now for ethernet cables at bedside, thanks to your devotion and the kindness of your donors.

****NEW****
We are also looking forward to a new group (cooking), called Bon Apetit, but are still in the planning stages for it. We are trying to gather a variety of smaller cooking appliances that can be used for many different types of meal preps. We are looking for new items due to appliance recalls that could affect our use of used items.

1. countertop convection oven (deep enough for 12-inch pizza to cook)
2.griddle
3.rectangular electric skillet
4. stand mixer

This group would allow our new and old injuries to work together, improving functional skills and abilities, to create simple meals. This would include safety tasks, cutting, pouring, opening packages, teamwork, collaboration, making healthy choices, nutrition, etc. The patients are excited to see this happen too!

The nursing home can always use personal hygiene items, PJs, socks, underwear and other types of items needed by patients who sometimes can not afford and have no other families to help them obtain.

Haley House Fund has a shared kitchen and laundry area for families of the wounded staying there to use. They can always use grocery items to fill the kitchen cabinets to help feed the families staying with them as well as laundry items. To see more http://www.haleyhousefund.com
